Innovative Smartpress system from Viega with flow-optimised metal connectors

In comparison to standard press connectors for multilayer pipes, the Viega Smartpress connectors of stainless steel or gunmetal (here a sectional view) have an optimal flow geometry and require no O-rings. Multilayer pipes are ideal for single-floor drinking water and heating installations. They can be laid quickly from the coil, and during installation only a few moulded parts are required. The new Viega Smartpress piping system simplifies workflows even more than before. The new stainless steel and gunmetal press connectors have no O-ring. This means there is no need to calibrate or widen pipes any more. In addition to the fast processing, the new Viega Smartpress connectors only cause very small pressure loss – up to 80% less than for standard press connectors for plastic piping. This means that drinking water installations can be dimensioned significantly smaller. This lowers investment and operating costs and contributes to maintaining drinking water quality.

With these innovative Smartpress connectors, Viega has achieved a major development breakthrough for multilayer pipes: The press connectors of stainless steel and gunmetal have no O-rings, but highly durable support bodies made of PPSU. After pressing, the pipe seals onto this completely. This makes processing easier, because the connector can be stuck onto the pipe and pressed directly after the pipe has been cut to length. There is no longer any need for deburring and calibrating or widening the multilayer pipes.

Downsizing
The basic advantage of the complete seal is that the cross-section is not reduced because of an O-ring, and all deflection fittings display flow-optimised geometries. Standard press connectors for multilayer pipes of brass or solid plastic have right-angled flow deflectors and markedly reduced internal cross-sections on account of O-rings, and these cause considerable pressure losses.
In contrast, the deflectors in the base units of the Viega Smartpress connectors of stainless steel and gunmetal display flow-optimised geometries. Therefore the connectors have very low resistance coefficients (zeta values), significantly less than those of common standard connectors.

These low flow resistances make it possible to plan plumbing installations in which the pipelines and connectors have a smaller nominal width. This makes for lower material costs. Leaner dimensioning also gives rise to shorter output times and greater reserves to cope with consumption peaks.

Easy laying with high-quality pipe
The multilayer piping of Viega's Smartpress system is available in the sizes 16 to 63 mm. It consists of a PE-Xc base pipe, an aluminium layer and a PE-Xc mantle. This design guarantees dimensional stability, a reliable oxygen seal and high durability, and the pipe can easily be laid from the coil. Viega produces this very robust pipe at the Niederwinkling works in Bavaria, Germany. This is where the company concentrates its plastic pipe production operations.

For plumbing and heating installations
Viega Smartpress multilayer pipes are approved for use in drinking water and heating installations. In drinking water installations, the flow-optimised Viega Smartpress piping system ensures on the one hand am adequate supply of water even where high demands are placed on the system simultaneously. On the other hand, such installations also promote drinking water quality: The small cross-sections of the piping system mean that the water is exchanged regularly and the risk of stagnation is lowered.

For heating installations, Viega already presented a wide range of practical connection fittings and problem solvers at the Smartpress system’s market launch – for easiest and quickest processing. Amongst other things, especially economical radiator connection blocks as well as pre-insulated pipelines are available.

The innovative Smartpress connectors are pressed using the familiar Viega press tools with press jaws tailored to the system.
